A Summer Portrait Session in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Couples and Portraits

Jul 12

Alyssa and I headed out to a field in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for a creative portrait session surrounded by wildflowers, tall grass, and all of that deep summer greenery.

We kept the plan pretty simple and gave ourselves room to experiment as we went. We wandered through the field, followed little paths through the flowers, and played around with movement, different perspectives, and whatever caught our attention along the way.

One of my favorite parts about photographing somewhere like this is how much you can find in what seems like such a simple location.

We moved between the open field, patches of wildflowers, and the edges of the trees, finding completely different little pockets to photograph as we went. Alyssa ran through the grass, twirled through the field, laid out on a blanket, and was pretty much up for anything I wanted to try.

I also loved mixing in black and white throughout the session. Some of the images feel soft and still, while others have a little more movement and energy, which made the final gallery feel like such a fun mix.

Portrait sessions are some of my favorite opportunities to experiment because there doesn’t always have to be a strict plan or shot list.

Sometimes we start with a location and a general idea and build from there, following the light, trying something unexpected, and seeing where the session takes us.

This afternoon with Alyssa was exactly that. A beautiful summer field, a little creative freedom, and plenty of room to make something together.
