There are some locations where you could wander around for hours and still keep finding new places to photograph, and Maymont in Richmond, Virginia is definitely one of them.
We spent this summer afternoon exploring the gardens and grounds for their engagement session, starting among the trees before making our way through some of Maymont’s prettiest little corners. Stone pathways, gardens, staircases, tucked-away benches, and so much greenery made it feel like we had a completely new setting every few minutes.
An Engagement Session at Maymont
One of the things I loved most about this session was how much we were able to do without ever leaving Maymont.
We wandered through the gardens, stopped along the stone walls and pathways, found some gorgeous pockets of light under the trees, and basically just kept exploring. Instead of sticking to one spot, we let the property guide us and stopped whenever something caught our eye.
And these two were SO much fun together. There was plenty of laughing, running around, dancing, climbing onto walls, and a few moments that probably had us questioning whether someone was going to end up in the water.
It made the whole afternoon feel more like hanging out together than working our way through a list of photos we needed to get.
Two Looks, One Session
About halfway through, they switched things up for a second look, which I loved.
Their first look felt a little dressier, and then we moved into something more relaxed for the second half of the session. It gave us a chance to play around even more and made the final gallery feel like two chapters of the same afternoon without needing to change locations.
Some of my favorite photos came from this part of the session. Sitting together on the stone walls, sneaking kisses beneath the trees, walking through the gardens, and all of those little moments in between.
Engagement Photos That Feel Like a Date
This is exactly why I love giving engagement sessions enough time to actually explore.
You don’t need to spend the entire session thinking about what you’re supposed to be doing in front of the camera. We can wander, talk, find beautiful spots along the way, and make photographs out of what naturally happens.
Maymont was pretty much perfect for that.
By the end, we had everything from romantic portraits surrounded by the gardens to blurry movement, black-and-white moments, little details, and plenty of photographs of these two laughing together.
Basically, the kind of engagement session where you get to make a little afternoon out of it.
And I will always be here for that.
